The report draws on official data from major regulators across the US, Canada, UK, EU, Australia and New Zealand, providing RQA’s own analysis of trends, causes and emerging risks.

Headline insights from H1 2025

  • Food sector
    • US FDA food recall events are projected to be 15% higher than in 2024, with microbiology the leading cause by product count but allergens the leading cause by event numbers.
    • USDA recalls are on track to rise, including the first Class III recall since 2018.
    • EU RASFF food alerts remain near record levels, with fruit & veg the most common category.
    • UK FSA alerts are projected to rise in 2025, with total numbers expected to match 2017 levels.
    • Allergen-related labelling errors are the top cause of recall events for the FSA, FDA, FSANZ and MPI.
  • Consumer products
    • The US CPSC has recorded a 38% increase in recalls, with children and infant products leading the rise following tighter regulation under the Safe Sleep for Babies Act.
    • EU Safety Gate recalls are up 23% this year with cosmetics still dominating, largely due to prohibited substances in perfumes and aftershaves.
  • Automotive
    • NHTSA and UK DVSA recall numbers are set to fall but EU Safety Gate motor vehicle recalls are projected to rise 18%.
    • Electrical systems remain the most common component at fault in NHTSA data.
