Headline insights from H1 2025
- Food sector
- US FDA food recall events are projected to be 15% higher than in 2024, with microbiology the leading cause by product count but allergens the leading cause by event numbers.
- USDA recalls are on track to rise, including the first Class III recall since 2018.
- EU RASFF food alerts remain near record levels, with fruit & veg the most common category.
- UK FSA alerts are projected to rise in 2025, with total numbers expected to match 2017 levels.
- Allergen-related labelling errors are the top cause of recall events for the FSA, FDA, FSANZ and MPI.
- Consumer products
- The US CPSC has recorded a 38% increase in recalls, with children and infant products leading the rise following tighter regulation under the Safe Sleep for Babies Act.
- EU Safety Gate recalls are up 23% this year with cosmetics still dominating, largely due to prohibited substances in perfumes and aftershaves.
- Automotive –
- NHTSA and UK DVSA recall numbers are set to fall but EU Safety Gate motor vehicle recalls are projected to rise 18%.
- Electrical systems remain the most common component at fault in NHTSA data.
