Key Takeaways from the Product Recall Report 2025

Food sector

  • The number of recall events and alerts increased across several regulators including the US FDA, USDA, EU RASFF, Canada, France and the UK FSA. 
  • For the US FDA, microbiological contamination was the leading cause by product count, responsible for around 43% of recalled products, while allergens accounted for 37% of recall events. 
  • EU RASFF food notifications remained high in 2025 following record figures in 2024.
  • Allergen-related labelling errors were the leading cause of recall events across multiple regulators including the FSA, FDA, FSANZ and New Zealand MPI. 

Consumer products

  • 2025 reached record recall levels for both the US CPSC and the EU Safety Gate.
  • US CPSC recall events increased by 38% compared with 2024. 
  • EU Safety Gate alerts also rose, increasing 14% compared with last year’s record total. 

Automotive

  • Automotive recall activity increased in several regions including the EU Safety Gate and UK DVSA. 
  • In the US, 31.3 million vehicles were recalled in 2025.
