The European Commission publishes the 2017 Annual RASFF Report

The Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) Annual Report has just been published, and shows that a total of 3832 notifications of food or feed risks were reported to the European Commission in 2017.  942 of these were classified as
“alert”, indicating a serious health risk for which rapid action was required.   A few initial findings from the report include:

• Italy, as with most years, issued the most original notifications of any country with 551 in 2017.

• The hazard category causing the most notifications was pathogenic micro-organisms at 300, followed by
heavy metals at 118 and allergens at 116.

• The most notifications for product category was fish and fish products at 135, followed by poultry meat and poultry meat products at 96 and then fruit and vegetables at 86.
