RAPEX dangerous non-food products report 2019 published

The European Commission’s Safety Gate has published its report on the 2019 results of the Rapid Alert System for dangerous non-food products (RAPEX).

We have studied the report and pulled out the following key points:

  • The number of alerts remains steady at 2243, continuing the trend of over 2000 alerts for the last 7 years
  • Toys was again the highest category of products subject to alerts, followed by motor vehicles
  • Chemical risks were a particular concern noticed in 2019, 47% of toy alerts involved chemical issues, the cosmetics category saw issues with mercury in products, and also issues with tattoo ink were noted
  • China was yet again the country of origin with the most alerts, however this is steadily reducing, whereas alerts for products from within the EU are on the rise

Of particular note to us, as experts in recall, were the results of an EU wide survey on product recall effectiveness, which found:

  •  A third of EU consumers carry on using dangerous products even when they see a recall notice. To improve consumer response, recalls need to become easier to implement and more transparent
  • Six out of ten consumers are not aware that registering a product allows them to be contacted in case of safety issues. At the same time, consumers are willing to share their personal information if they get a clear assurance that it will not be used for marketing purposes
  • Consumers appreciate and reward businesses’ transparency with increased trust and confidence.
